Culture - Tradition - Heritage
Our first Annual Italian Heritage Concert - Dinner was held on January 5, 2008 at the Westchester Manor
in Hastings on Hudson, NY. The evening was a success and we were thrilled with the support that we
received not only from family and friends but from those who had a curiosity and hunger for an
educational cultural experience. We are pleased with the many positive comments regarding the evening.
Our attendees included Italian-Americans from all parts of Italy and honored dignitaries: Mr. Steve Acunto,
Hon. Francis Nicolai, Hon. Dominic Massaro, Deputy Consul Giovanni Favilli, Mayor Philip Amicone of
Yonkers, NY and Mayor Clinton I. Young of Mt. Vernon, NY, to name a few.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a “gemelaggio” (sister city recognition) between the
city of Yonkers, NY & the town of Mongrassano, prov Cosenza, Italy exchanged by Mayor Amicone &
Mayor Barbagallo. Furthermore, Mayor Amicone presented Mayor Barbagallo with a “key to the city”
including a proclamation for the ethnic group, Tira Dirittu.
Additionally, Mayor Barbagallo presented Mayor Young of Mt. Vernon, NY with a Plaque of Friendship
since Barbagallo was born in Mt. Vernon, NY. He was humbled and felt an inner desire to meet the
mayor of the town that gave him his start in life. Through hard work and determination, he became a
successful attorney and subsequently Mayor of Mongrassano. This was a true “reverse culture”
scenario.
On Wednesday, January 9, 2008, Mayor Young held a public ceremony at Mt. Vernon City Hall
recognizing Mayor Barbagallo as a native Mt. Vernonite returning to his city.
What was more amazing what we at C.I.A.O. accomplished at the Carmel & Mahopac School Systems on
January 7 & 8, 2008. An approximate 1,300 students of the Italian language, arts & music programs were
treated to a Tira Dirittu concert rich in culture and tradition.
We need your support in working together for the sake of our great traditions, culture and heritage. We,
working together, will accomplish our directives.
We must not fail or our history will forever perish.
